Vineyards close deals to enter the British market during London International Wine Fair
Luggage full of prizes and contracts for the highly sought after British market, the Brazilian wineries are celebrating a successful result at the London International Wine Fair (LIWF), which has taken place between the 18th and 20th May. Ten Brazilian wines have won medals at the International Wine Challenge 2010, one of the most prestigious independent wine competitions in the world. In the next few months, British consumers will be able to taste the products from Aurora, Lidio Carraro, Miolo and Rio Sol in restaurants and pubs throughout the UK as well as at the “Trail” in Vinopolis in the capital.
Competing with more than 10 thousand samples of wine from all over the world, the Brazilians have been awarded a silver (sparkling muscat Cave Geisse) and three bronze (sparkling Prosecco Aurora, wine Salton Talento, and sparkling Legado Moscatel, by Wine Park). Another six sparkling wines were awarded commended, as follows: muscat from Vinícola Garibaldi; Casa Valduga Brut 130; Natural Brut Cave Geisse; Pericó Brut; Gran Legado Champenoise Brut; and Gran Legado Charmat Brut.
Journalist and wine writer Andrew Catchpole says that the awards are a very important recognition and come at a critical moment, when most of the consumers in the UK market are just getting to know the Brazilian wines. “The world’s leading Masters of Wine and tasters decided that the Brazilian wines stand up with the best in the world”, says Catchpole.
“It is an important recognition for the Brazilian wineries which have sent 32 samples and have walked away with more than 30% of the prizes in such a respected competition” pointed out Andreia Gentilini Milan, export manager of Wines from Brazil.
Arrival at the United Kingdom
Relatively new in the international market – the export project Wines from Brazil was launched in 2002 – Brazil is the only country from the so called New World to have distinctive high quality sparkling wines. In the last few years, the wine makers have invested heavily in the sector and have implanted a revolution in the production of wines in the country. The results are clear. Apart from the prizes, they have ended up their trip to the United Kingdom with the official opening this Friday 21st of the Brazil Space at the Trail of Wine at Vinopolis, in London, where 16 different wines will be available to the public.
From June, well known restaurants like Zuma and Roka will be offering in their wine lists the white Dádivas (Chardonnay) and Red Lidio Carraro (Merlot), both from Lidio Carraro. Another two wine makers have developed products specifically for the British market and started harvesting their results from this strategic move already. Miolo closed a deal with Bibendum and, for the past month, has been selling its Alisios do Seival red (Tempranillo and Touriga Nacional) and white (Pinot Grigio e Riesling Italic). Aurora has developed four sparkling wines for the UK - top market, 100% Chardonnay and 100% Pinot Noir, and entry level, Riesling and Semillon Brut and Demi Sec. Those wines from Aurora will enter the British Market in the second part of the year and, hopefully, will be part of the End of the Year Festivities.
And from Monday 24th, The red (Cabernet-Shiraz) from Rio Sol will be sold at Wetherspoons – one of the biggest chains of pubs in Great Britain, with more than 750 places – which is part of the World Cup Promotion, selling wines from the Winners of Football most prestigious prize.
Nine Brazilian wineries were represented at the LIWF, as part of the initiative organized by Wines from Brazil in partnership with Apex-Brasil (Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency) – Aurora Winery Cooperative, Casa Valduga, Cia Piagentini de bebidas e Alimentos, Lidio Carraro Boutique Winery, Miolo Wine Group, Pizzato Vinhas e Vinhos, Vinhos Salton, ViniBrasil (Rio Sol) and Vinicola Irmãos Basso.
